By using the organic farming technologies the farmers are producing different crops, livestock, fishes etc. UD has been facilitation support to the farmers and the SKS to produce different organic products to sale to the market in a collective approach. For this purpose UD has been providing training & technical support to the farmers and SKS leaders to produce quality organic crops, livestock, fishes by maintaining Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) introduced by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) namely BOAN-BARI PGS in order to sell through a specific market channel to the consumers.
At present there is no specific market channel for organic products in Bangladesh. In order to facilitate the marketing of organic products of the farmers UD has been trying to develop a market channel called Lokaj Bazar as part of the Lokaj Eco-friendly Agri-Enterprise having direct ownership of farmers. Initially, UD & SKS has opened an outlet at Jhenaidah town and taking preparation to open three more outlets at local market level and one at Dhaka.
Through this channel the farmers have started to sell their safe food products both perishable & non-perishable directly to the consumers. Specially the women farmers are becoming more benefited from the enterprise as they are able to sell their surplus organic homestead production though the channel and get higher price than the traditional market.
UD believes that Strong and Independent Farmer Organization is the key to Sustainable Development of the Farmer/Peasants Community of Bangladesh. For the existence of the smallholders in present corporate agriculture the farmers have to be organized and work together collectively in the form of cooperative or something else for their self-help sustainable development.
So, UD has been facilitating to development a farmer organization named “Swadhin Krishok Sangathan (SKS). SKS has already been formed in 90 villages under three Upazilas of Jhenaidah & Magura district with around 8000 members (50% women members). The SKS is active in organic production and marketing as well as raising their voice for their rights.
Cultural media is a powerful tool for raising awareness of farmers and people as a whole. Moreover, the traditional peoples’ culture is endangered now-a-days by the aggression of corporate culture driven by individualism and consumerism. So, for enhancing the practices of folk cultural elements, UD has been trying to nourish the folk cultural groups of rural people side by side using cultural media for raising peoples’ awareness on different issues.
